When using natural dyes it is amazing what can be used! Cochineal is a scale insect that feeds on cact. When the female insects are dried and pulverized they create beautiful pinks and reds. This dye had been used for centuries and was first introduced from Mexico. This 12" wide x 60" long paj silk scarf was first dyed in a cochineal bath and produced a beautiful pink color. I then bound the scarf into a textured mat to produce a unique design and dipped it several times into an indigo vat. I was pleased with the results because the scarf produced a beautiful combination of pink and blue with slight pockets of faint yellow. This is why I love to eco-dye, each time is something completely different!
